Like Hypnosis Guy said. It should say "Monsters flee: On" and "Monsters flee: Off" if you click on it. 

This is also revealed if you read the intro, where those things are explained.

'''???''': Nevermind that. We have another page of the menu to look at. Here you can set options, such as muting the sound, making monsters stop fleeing from combat, and saving your game. Just type a name for your save file, then click save to save, or load to load. But don't use symbols.
