The Protagonist the Controlling Mage

There's two playable Protagonists in Adventure High: Dan and Rosa (though always refered to as The Protagonist on this wiki with a handful of exceptions, such as dates that requires you to play as either Dan or Rosa).

The Protagonist is a childhood friend of Valerie, or Val for short.

The Protagonist has as of version 0.45 fourteen spells, of which one is Hidden.

Sarah is only datable if you're playing as Dan (unless you charm her as Rosa).

Rosa currently has no female-exclusive relationships but will have one with Cassandra in the future (though you will be able to charm her, make her your pet or enslave her as Dan).

While a normally calm person, it's up to the player to decide how the Protagonist is in the end: Either a caring person who wants to stop Drape from abusing his power to change school to his fitting, or enslave everyone in the school. Or, hell, cause everyone to turn into bimbos.

The Protagonist lacks any damaging spells initially and as such relies on his/her teammates to deal damage, or (as unlocked later) the Confuse spell to make enemies hurt themselves.

The Protagonist can naturally not use any magic and is as such considered "giftless". It's unknown as to why - or how - this happens for certain people.

There's a handful of scenes that requires the player to play as either Dan or Rosa. However, in general, this mostly just affects minor story details. With a few exceptions.

Background

The Protagonist grew up in a somewhat poor home - apparently unable to afford a Crystalizer to obtain Gems, which is described to be quite expensive up front, but pays themselves off quite quickly. Instead, the Protagonist is given Molly's old one, something the Protagonist is grateful for. She admits to having no issue with being able to purchase a new one anyway.

The Protagonist's father is away on an extended trip and as such isn't likely to return before the end of the school year. After reaching the seventh floor in the Dungeon - or getting two slaves, the Protagonist will find a note from his/her mother, saying she managed to get a job with her husband as they needed the extra money.

To make sure the Protagonist wouldn't go hungry, she made him/her casserole - apparently enough to scare the Protagonist enough to wonder if s/he'll be able to finish it all before it goes bad.

As a child, the Protagonist apparently quite often hung out with Val. As a result, as they grew up, Val grew to fall in love with the Protagonist - something the Protagonist is apparently completely unaware about.

Seeing Val as nothing more than a childhood friend (or a possible love interest or slave), the Protagonist has no issue with discussing anything on his/her mind with Val, though Val's short temper - and slight obsession - towards the Protagonist often leaves the Protagonist dumbfounded at Val's behavior.

Heroic Route

During the Heroic Route, the Protagonist does everything in his/her power to prevent Drape from abusing his power to take control of the students.

The first person the Protagonist runs into like this is Val, who is dressed like Drape. The Protagonist questions her wardrobe choices and she claims it's of her own free will. The Protagonist doesn't buy it and asks Dr. Tiff for help, but she can't figure out what's wrong with her to begin with, other than her being cursed somehow.

Jane asks the Protagonist how his/her friend is and the Protagonist asks what she means. Jane explains that she saw them entering Dr. Tiff's room and volunteers to help Drape out. The Protagonist agrees and brings Sarah along to fix Val's mind.

Once done, the Protagonist used Boost to fix her and went to speak to Ms. Rack about it. Ms. Rack says she'll speak to Drape about abusing his powers on students, which the Protagonist and Val are grateful for.

The next person that Drape cursed is Sarah, who claims she hasn't seen the Protagonist in the Debilibating magic class and claims that all good students attend all classes.

The Protagonist realizes that she's been put under Drape's control and tells Jane about it. Jane, once again, agrees to help.

Heading into Sarah's Mind, the Protagonist realizes that everything is on fire, including the enemies.

After fixing her mind, Jane tells the Protagonist she's willing to teach him/her how to use his/her magic more effectively. The Protagonist agrees to this.

After completing two or more of the classes, the Protagonist can head to Drape's classroom, who will drop the Protagonist down a trap door.

If the Protagonist is good enough friends with Sarah, Val or Julia, the Protagonist will be saved and thank them for coming to their rescue.

The next person to be enslaved is Julia, either from helping the Protagonist escape, or due to her deal with the Protagonist.

At this point, the Protagonist can either push past her and bring Jane to the library, or subdue her. Choosing the former causes the Protagonist to go past Julia and bring Jane to the library and the Protagonist will enter Julia's Mind.

The Protagonist casually remarks that her mind looks like a library - something that should come as a surprise to exactly no one who knows her.

After defeating the boss in her mind, one of two routes plays out.

If the Protagonist subdued her, she will force the Protagonist out and, as she does, Drape enters the room with the intention of enslaving Jane. However, upon seeing that Jane is doing a private class with some students, he decides to come back later without saying anything further.

If the Protagonist pushed past her, the Protagonist will end up in Julia's body and will have to go to Dr. Tiff to get his/her body back... Assuming the Protagonist tells Tiff the minimum amount needed as otherwise, it leads to another bad ending.

Bimbo World New Game+

During the Bimbo World New Game+, the Protagonist will encounter Val, as if it was a normal new game. However, her hair has turned blonde and she is very visibly a bimbo. When the Protagonist starts to talk about her hair, she simply asks "what about it?" and claims she did it as always. The Protagonist shakes it off without saying anything further.

In class, the Protagonist is able to team up with Val, attempt to team up with Sarah - who will refuse as she's tagging with Cassandra - or with Molly, who also lacks magic. Choosing anyone but Val drops Val's affection by one level.

If the Protagonist chooses to go with Molly, she'll obtain magic but the Protagonist won't. She sticks with the Protagonist, trying to cheer him/her up until they run into Val, who gives the Protagonist magic. When Molly asks what happened, Val claims it was something only a close friend could solve. Molly is visibly hurt by this comment but says nothing further about it, realizing she had only just met the Protagonist.

Mysterious Book New Game+

During the Mysterious Book New Game+, the Protagonist runs into Val as if it was a normal New Game. However, the Protagonist remarks that it feels like this has happened once before. The Protagonist is confused about it but doesn't say anything more about it.

In class, the Protagonist can either team with Val, try to team up with Sarah - who will refuse as she's tagging with Cassandra - or with Julia, who already has magic. Julia examines the Protagonist to see what kind of gift s/he has, but is surprised at the fact s/he doesn't have any.

They head into the Dungeon and upon touching the sigil, nothing happens.

Julia explains that the Protagonist is somehow numb to magic and, if she had any offensive spells, she'd gladly try to use them on the Protagonist to see if s/he would be hurt by it. They head out and encounter Val, who gives the Protagonist some magic in secret.

Upon talking to Julia again, Julia is surprised at the fact that the Protagonist now has magic and, whatever Val's gift was, has changed. She then heads to the library, hoping to speak with them more there.

Enchantment Levels

Enchanting the Protagonist's clothes gives the following stats:

Level 1

Attack

+8 Power

Defense

+60 HP, +7 Defense

Endurance

+2 Speed, +25 Stamina and Brittany about to say s/he is able to "last longer in bed" before correcting herself to "in battle".

Trivia

  • The Protagonist starts with 100 HP and Stamina.
  • The Protagonist is the first character able to use all four kinds of spells.
  • Despite remarking that the school has no dress code, the Protagonist, Derrick and Cassandra all dress quite formal compared to everyone else, who - supposedly - wears clothes they find comfortable or otherwise like.
  • The Protagonist is most likely a year older than everyone else, as the Protagonist was one day too young to enroll in the school but still a year younger than Ashley, as she's described as being a year older than the Protagonist is.
    • This is further evidenced by Molly's Japanese School Girl outfit, in which she refers to the Protagonist as "Senpai" (meaning "senior"). However, that could possibly just be for appeal.
  • As of version 0.42, the Protagonist gets a scene upon returning from School the first time in which s/he is told how the menu and how to save works by ???. When ??? casually remarks that the Protagonist might accidentally destroy the entire world, the Protagonist - for obvious reasons - freaks out about it.
