Leveling Tips, Tricks and Shit To Keep In Mind Unless You Want to Die
General Tips
- Everyone goes back to Level 1 when you NG+ so you might want to do this on a NG+ instead of a fresh game (Val gets access to Erase too, making it easier) and on the savestate you have the most playable characters available.
- The Protagonist keeps their Proficiency on a NG+. Everyone else has their default proficiencies. Yes, you need to get Val back to 10,000 if you want Erase.
- That's only 20 Overgrowth casts, though, so just have her destroy stuff. It's worth it because it does insane damage even at level 1.
- Party size doesn't matter. You always gain the same amount of EXP.
- You will not get three times as much EXP if you solo, so bring two teammates as long as they don't slow you down and you have an use for them (or rather, they have an use for you, since that's the spirit of the game, after all).
- Some characters may need to get a specific amount of levels to trigger some events or plotlines. Make sure you get this out of the way before grinding too much.
- You cannot go any higher than level 100 and there is no way to level down or get level drained as of version 0.62.
- You cannot run out of Stamina. Ever. While your damage output will be severely crippled and low or negative Stamina also causes you to act very slowly, going back to your room will fix that. The Mysterious Book can be an issue but then again, you can have someone keep it for you... as long as they don't end up stealing it should you ever need it again.
- If that is not an option, Molly and rests can also help. If you are in low Stamina state, use fast skills so you don't have to wait forever.
- Running away from a fight will not give any EXP but fleeing monsters still give 7/15 of EXP as long as you finish off the ones that don't.
- The Protagonist's level determines the threat you pose to enemies, while the strongest enemy (when facing multiple opponents) determines the level the Protagonist needs to be at for this to happen.
- Yes. This means that if you have a level 100 Protagonist and the other two are level 1, you can just have all enemies run away from you for fast EXP.

Party Setups (Disclaimer: use whichever you please. We don't judge. Often.)
- Passive Leveling should be used with the Protagonist and Julia (if you have her) for optimal effect.
- If you don't need to unlock additional spells from the Spell List and all encounters result in scaring away high EXP monsters or you just want a higher level Protagonist (so you can make stronger enemies run away, resulting in more EXP for your team), all you need to do is allow monsters to run away, have Julia's Detect spell (so you can double the encounter rate) and set it up accordingly, then just run around until you can go deeper and do the same.
- Ashley is recommended as the third teammate if things don't go as planned or you just want to punch things (and she does too) as she is pretty tanky and sisters are cool together </bias>.
- If you don't have her or don't want her for some reason, bring Val for Erase or Molly for her heals and stamina support, though the Protagonist's double heal (assuming your teammates have over 50 Affection with them) is a viable alternative without sacrificing a slot.
- KO'd party members get EXP too but don't forget to heal them if the fight is far from over or once the fight is over. Well, you should be healing them after a fight anyway. And if you have Cassandra, that's the only reason she needs you.
- Unless you are the one she cannot confess to and you charmed both just because they'll both be obsessed with the Protagonist, with each other and also with themselves, indirectly. Controlling souls can do weird things.
- Despite claiming she's nothing but a walking pair of jugs with glasses and not a fighter (okay, now that's not the way she phrases it), Julia can make your leveling mission much easier.
- Tactical Withdrawal is a serious speed buff and helps Ashley Rapid Punch even more times if you have both in the team; it also makes you act faster so you can get that stamina back more easily or end the fight even faster. Detect can double the encounter rate, helping a lot with monster intimidation should you decide to go with Passive Leveling instead, as well as helping the Protagonist level faster without entering a single battle.
- And if Ashley's there too, she'll be punching things hard from the Protagonist's and Julia's speed buffs.

Keep Some Stuff in Mind. Or not. I'm a heading, not a cop.
- Save the Secret Notes for when you need them! 9 teammates are available in total and some of them require actual teaching to learn the rest of the corresponding school. Check the spell list to know who needs what and plan accordingly before heading to a secret class.
- Always make sure the EXP/time spent ratio is optimal for your level (the Protagonist's if using Passive Leveling).
- You are not getting bonuses from exterminating Twin Turtles at level 1 (except to your ego, if you're that kind of player; we don't judge players, don't worry) so if you can make Alure Fish run away at Protagonist level 41 faster than you would take down Twin Turtles, that's your best bet for experience.
- At lower levels (11-20) just pick the ones that give the most EXP and flee automatically. Make sure you consider enemy party size as well, if you meet 2 enemies and they both run away instantly, that's double the experience from just intimidating them.

- If you somehow manage to lose a level for some reason, your stats DO NOT drop. This means you can not only get the level back but you'll get the stat bonus again, too, making the character even stronger. Or completely break them if you do it over and over again.
- Bear in mind you can train your damaging proficiencies by targeting your own KO'd party members instead of running into lots of fights. For the Protagonist and Val, during a reloaded Demoman fight, have Val KO herself with her own spells then use Flirt on her (see below) and Rest if Stamina gets low until Val gets her initial profs to your liking as Kate will not interrupt here. If you were patient enough to spam Frozen Grip on yourself 90 times, Val should now have Erase at level 1.
- Lower floors with monster flight disabled are recommended if you find this to be faster than actual grinding for damaging profs.
- Frozen Grip is recommended for this because it's the single target spell with the best prof gain/delay ratio (AoE suicide spellcasting requires you to have 10% or less Stamina or you'll end up exterminating the entire party, and even so, you'll still be causing a good bunch of damage to everyone alive).
- Get Demoman to kill the party four times and reload your pre-NG+ savestate if you want Val to get 3 hearts as soon as possible for the Flirt double heal. Doing this just once is enough as long as you get 15 Affection and 5 Trust both times, though you can do it more times should you want more trust.
- When you get access to fixed Ashley, use Transform in the streets and repeat the dialogue options until she's at 3 hearts.
- Do all affection (and trust) routes for your teammates to get early benefits from Flirt and also gain control if needed.
- Lower floors with monster flight disabled are recommended if you find this to be faster than actual grinding for damaging profs.
Levels 1-10
LEVEL 1:
You'll always fight a Demoman as your first enemy. Simply hit it once with Burst from Val and he'll die as long as she has full stamina. If you asked Val whether she wanted you to use your Gift on an enemy, she will do that part herself, otherwise you will be in control until the end of the fight no matter how far you pushed her (hopefully no more than once).
Head to school, get Sarah, head back into the dungeon and head to floor 3.
Once at floor 3, you'll start fighting Baby Slimes and Tentacle Grapes. Keep fighting those until you reach level 3. It shouldn't take too long - head back to your room if you drop low on Stamina. An advice is that you fight at least 3 Tentacle Grapes for their tentacles so you can do level 1 Enchantment on your clothes later (requires 3 pieces of slime and 1 tentacle along with 300 Gems).
LEVEL 3:
Head to the Dungeon and proceed to floor 4. Blue Footed Boobies are rather tough enemies, but fully manageable at this level. Have Sarah and Val attack while the Protagonist keeps your HP up. Keep this up until level 6.
Note: If you want to access Val's mind, it's advised you do so at level 5.
If so, simply head to the boss and kill it. You can stay for a short time to gain some fast EXP, but with no way to recover Stamina outside of using Rest which might put you in for a world of hurt, it's ill-advised.
LEVEL 6:
Head to Dungeon Floor 7. Rubber Naga's starts spawning on floor 6 along with Mature Slimes. They're quite a bit tougher compared to the Blue Footed Boobies you've been leveling on so far, but they're not too bad. Rubber Naga's has a high magic defense stat, so if you have Grapple with the Protagonist, use it instead.
You're only here for 1-2 levels.
LEVEL 8:
Head to Dungeon Floor 9. Here, you'll find Slime Girls and Skull Slimes. It's ill-advised you fight Skull Slimes, but it's fully possible. Slime Girl, however, has 705 HP and gives 700 EXP. They're also weak to Fire, so bringing Sarah is highly recommended. If you have other members by now (such as Cassandra), feel free to swap Val out.
Now, you have two goals here: The first is to get enough Physical magic with the Protagonist to learn Trip. The second is to reach level 12-14 with all characters.
Once you do, head to dungeon floor 10 (if level 12). Otherwise, floor 11.
While possible to stay longer, the EXP starts lagging a little after level 14. It's recommended you stay here no longer than that.
Levels 10-20
LEVEL 12:
Dungeon floor 10 has 2 enemies: Sprout and Skull Slime. In all of those battles, kill the Skull Slime first. This cannot be stressed enough. Once you do, the Sprout becomes harmless. Simply kill it with Trip or Grapple.
If you, by this point, has obtained Ashley, swap her in if you so please (suggested you remove Sarah in that case).
LEVEL 14:
Head to dungeon floor 11 at this level. Mandragoras spawn here and they can cause a Stun Lock for on your characters due to Grapple. Use Trip with the Protagonist every single chance you have while the others hit them with their hardest hitting spells. I advice you rest up after every battle. Head to floor 12 once you're level 16.
LEVEL 16:
Here, we'll fight Flower Girls. They hit hard, they hit fast and they can Charm. Also Poison you.
Your best bet for defeating those is to bring the Protagonist, Sarah and anyone of your choice. Have the Protagonist use Trip (should deal around 3-400 damage) on one of them, then quickly finish that one off with weaker spells such as Grapple. They have a high magic defense, so Physical magic is preferred (bring Ashley if you have her).
However, as they only have 600 HP and give 1000 EXP/each, leveling here is very easy and very fast. Do so until level 20 on the Protagonist and around level 16-18 on all other characters. Then head to floor 15.
LEVEL 20:
You'll fight the Alure Fish here. With 1300 HP, this guy has HP for days.
That said, hit it with Trip from the Protagonist to heavily delay him and hit him with your hardest hitting spells with the other characters. It's highly recommended you head out and save after each fight. Luckily, there's a Sigil here, meaning no time lost in getting back whenever you need to.
A high leveled Ashley with Rapid Punch is capable of killing it in one shot with enough Stamina remaining. At level 24+, it's possible for her to kill it in one shot even at around half Stamina.
The lowest known level she's been seen killing it in one shot was level 18, using Rapid Punch.
